Why Zoro x Nami in particular?
Why, you truly ask? Indeed, there are people who ship this pairing a lot and there are people who don't see anything interesting in this because they think these two can only "argue" with each other. If you are from the first category - well, that's really good, but if you are from the second one - why don't you sit down and think about it first? If nothing comes to mind, then please, continue reading this, because I'm sure in the end of it, you won't think they are "just an arguing couple" anymore.
This couple is known by many names (capital letters aren't necessary):

Interaction
Zoro and Nami interact with each other regularly. They can be seen talking and discussing about trivial matters, sometimes, it's Nami who is right and eventually, their discussion turns to Nami yelling at/beating Zoro or when Zoro is right, and eventually, their discussion still turns to Nami yelling at/beating him...haha, of course, that was an exaggeration xD - both of them sometimes argue with each other because they know the other one won't step back easily - and no one gets hurt from it. Despite all this, they can have normal conversations and they care for each other a lot. Oda once even stated they are like very good friends.

Similar?
- both like alcohol a lot and both can endure a lot of it
- they are more calm and mature than most crewmembers, but at the same time, they are quite short-tempered and react in funny ways (Nami often overreacts more)
- both can be extremely scary (Zoro often looks scary - mostly to some weaker enemies he encounters and Nami is a living hell when she is angered)
- both are stubborn (not that much like Luffy though, but they are stubborn on the same level)
- both aren't that simple minded and they are also smart in their own way
- Zoro smells like steel, while Nami smells like money. If you think about that, Nami probably likes gold the most. And gold with steel are both metals ^^
Opposites attract
More than similar, these two are total opposites of each other - but that's also a reason why they complement each other so well.
More than similar, these two are total opposites of each other - but that's also a reason why they complement each other so well.
- Nami is one of the greatest navigators in the One Piece world.... and Zoro is the greatest directionally challenged person in the One Piece world - even more than Luffy (Luffy even made fun of Zoro's sense of direction at least twice).
- Zoro is very straightforward and he doesn't sugar coat things, while Nami is more cautious about dealing with matters and she is more considerate to feelings. Nami also doesn't have problems with acting while Zoro is himself and he doesn't act much (he often does what he wants, says what he wants).
- Zoro searches for fights, while Nami tries to avoid them.
- Nami takes care of her beauty very much, while Zoro doesn't care about what he wears. Even Oda stated Zoro doesn't know how to dress up.
- Zoro is physically stronger than Nami and he uses that fact to fight with. Nami doesn't rely that much on physical strenght as to her mind which she uses the most in ordder to fight (like manipulating with weather). Zoro also specializes in close combat, while Nami in long-distance attacks.
- Zoro depends mostly on luck, while Nami at least tries to plan some things up (though Zoro sometimes goes along the plan or Nami herself believes in luck rather than explain everything).
- Zoro understands how much Nami loves money and compared to her, he isn't greedy.
- their bounty posters were commented upon and the reactions people have for each of them is almost like the opposites: Sanji was very annoyed when he saw Zoro's poster, while he was very happy when he saw Nami's. Caribou was kind of frightened when he saw the real Roronoa Zoro and he was on the other hand drooling when he saw Nami.
Some rather interesting relationships the two have with other characters
LUFFY
Both Zoro and Nami have one rather special relationship with Luffy-they are his first friends and they carry a bit heavier burden than the rest since they sometimes have to help him - Nami is a navigator who is the core point in travelling and reaching Raftel. She also scolds and beats Luffy (and others) whenever they are stupid or they are about to commit some stupid things. Zoro on the other hand has to make sure Luffy will never stray of his way as captain and he sometimes acts like Luffy's right hand man of some sort. The two of them are sometimes like some sort of Luffy's guardians who have to keep him in check.

SANJI
There is this ongoing joke about how much Zoro and Sanji fight each other over very trivial things. But strangely as it is, most of those fights are triggered by Nami - and she is also the reason of their first fight too.

Zoro gets annoyed by Sanji's attitude quite often (mainly when it is pointed at Nami somehow). However, Nami sometimes gets annoyed by the cook's attitude too. Like here, the two of them even have similar thoughts on Sanji xD

CHOPPER
Zoro and Nami also have this kind of very caring relationship with Chopper. There are times when the three of them spend time together and it's very nice to see how much Nami likes Chopper (his cuteness mainly?) and how much Zoro cares for Chopper too. I have written one hellish page about them, so please check it out for more ^^ here: The relationship with Chopper

TASHIGI
-As strange as it is, yes. Tashigi reminds Zoro and Nami of people they hold very dear but aren't in this world anymore. For Zoro, she reminds him of Kuina a lot and she also reminds Nami of her mother figure Bellemere. It's also interesting to note Nami holds a lot of respect and liking to Tashigi, while Zoro shows he is annoyed by Tashigi's attitude and he doesn't show much respect to her either.

Reasons why:
Now that we have gotten past some similarities and differences, it is time to show the exact reasons why this pairing in particular makes a lot of sense.
Now that we have gotten past some similarities and differences, it is time to show the exact reasons why this pairing in particular makes a lot of sense.
1) Zoro and Nami have a lot of moments together and first of all, although this might be stupid to even mention, but these two have normal conversations going on between them from time to time ^^
2) More than normal talking, whenever those two are together - best when they are even almost alone, there tends to be a funny moment just behind the corner, waiting to pop out! Not funny in that perverse sense like with Sanji or Brook (which is now quite often). In the early One Piece and mainly pre-timeskip, the two of them argue more than later in the series. However, more than arguing though, they just raise their voice on the other one. Zoro is one of the few who talks back to Nami - and that is very important. He isn't afraid to call back what Nami is doing wrong (or what he thinks she did) - basically, he points out her flaws. The same way, Nami isn't afraid to say what is wrong with him and she points it out when he does something...that needs being pointed out xD
Aside from arguing, Zoro also isn't afraid to go against her and he can even tell her to shut up in a rather harsh manner - I have kind of counted it and by far he is the only guy who ever said shut up the most to her... afraid or not, when he finds her annoying or when they are in a bad situation where her talking can only make the situation worse, he can tell it to her and that's important.

3) With the statement 2) also comes hand to hand the fact Nami isn't afraid to punch Zoro whenever he acts stupid. That is rather strange - since the first time meeting, Nami hasn't shown to be afraid of him despite knowing how dangerous he is. And even so, she doesn't just step back because of it and scolds him whenever it's needed. Why doesn't Zoro ever hits her back? He definitely feels the pain (while Luffy mostly doesn't) and he isn't enjoying it either (like in Sanji's case). Although I agree with the fact that they have to receive some harder way to know their place, Nami could still be more gentle with them ^^"" Well, this all shows he is a gentleman and he tolerates her a lot. More importantly, all these moments are for the fun. Even more importantly though, Oda himself stated this is like a small banter between two very good friends and Nami's beating is like a fist/punch of love ^^ the guy also doesn't even have a chance to counter back after he has been totally pawned by her after all ^^""
4) However, Nami knows when she is wrong whenever it is pointed at her or shown to her and she doesn't argue back at him anymore. The same, she just doesn't beat Zoro with no reasons. One of those moments is when Zoro quite harshly lectured Chopper how to behave and although Nami is already rising her voice on Zoro, after seeing Chopper's reaction, she doesn't say anything anymore.
5) Despite their seemingly arguing, raising voice and Nami hitting him, they actually understand each other very well. Nami knows how directionally challenged the guy is and she is often careful to not let the guy stray off. He on the other hand knows when she flirts with anyone, but he never falls for it.
Zoro said the line "You broke two extra animals" - refering to Sanji and the camel.
Zoro said the line "You broke two extra animals" - refering to Sanji and the camel.
6) Nami is also able to make him do things he doesn't like at all. She understands him that much to know he will do it even though he complains - and if he won't do that..well, she still knows what things to say to hit the right spot too. The classic example of it is the way how Nami blackmailed Zoro in Whiskey Peak. What is the thing that made Zoro to do what she says? It was when she questioned him whether he can't even keep the promise - what is the strange thing here, promises are very important for Zoro (like the ones he made to Kuina or his captain), but in both cases, Nami wasn't there. And yet, she knew this was something that could work on him.
7) It's not even an understanding in the personality issues. Both of them know what the other one likes too. Zoro is often first to notice whenever Nami gets into money-loving mode and he isn't afraid to voice that. Like here, he is even first to notice the change in Nami's expression
Nami on the other hand knows full well Zoro likes sake and probably napping too. Seriously, if you look how much happy Zoro is after Nami brought both meat and sake into the train station, he is definitely more into sake. And mind you, sake isn't seriously something after what you would get a great power up unless you have some kind of drunkyard-kung-fu (Zoro doesn't have that by the way) ^^"

8) Understanding each other is one thing, but trusting is another issue. I will start with trusting Nami first. In Arlong Park, Zoro has first shown to be very surprised and maybe even uncomfortable to find out Nami is a part of Arlong's crew. His trust towards her was a lot wavered here. However, when Nami's expression changed, he immediately caught it and what does he do? He claims he doesn't trust her, but in the next moment, he jumps in the pool in order to die? Wrong! Since the beginning, he knew she isn't a bad person and he knew she will save him no matter what - he trusted her enough to even gamble his own life on it. More importantly though, by doing something like this, he also confirmed his doubts he ever had about her.
Aside from trusting, the previous moment also showed how Zoro was able to read her in a moment and Nami realized it (thus the outburst she later showed).
However, Zoro still had a way to really trust her navigation instincts. In the Reverse Mountain, it is shown he doesn't take Nami's instruction immediately and that shows to be fatal as they later find themselves in a nest of Sea Kings. After that, Zoro trusts Nami's instinct and navigation skills on the sea - this was especially shown in the time when Nami was sick.

9) Trust issues, 2. Trusting Zoro. Nami has shown to trust Zoro in dangerous situations a lot - she sometimes even does what he says despite knowing full well why.
However, there is also one time where Nami was more worried about Zoro and told him to not fight an enemy. She didn't believe he could defeat him but Zoro doesn't listen to her, a strong enemy or not. A lot later, although she knows the enemy is strong, she has already realized the guy won't pull back from a fight no matter who the opponent is and instead of telling him not to fight, she tells him to be careful AND she also told him the enemy's abilities.

10) Nami knows how strong Zoro is and she also commented his swordsmanship, knowing full well how much he prides into it. She knows he is sometimes even stronger than he alone realizes. Although she acknowledges his strenght and even cheers on him during his fights, she doesn't look up to him as a hero like some crewmembers and knows when he is just going overboard (or acting not-so-swordmanishly).
Zoro at first however doesn't truly think she can survive on her own - but he doesn't have anything against it when she has a weapon. Only time by time does he start to realize she is capable - maybe after he even once gets electrocuted in Enies Lobby or when he witnessed the strenght of her weapon in Thriller Bark (he even commented it!).

11) As if all of this wasn't enough already, Zoro has the most certain-death-saves whenever Nami is concerned. Those saves are (from the older to the most recent ones):
1. first meeting - from Buggy pirates
2. Zoro kicks some soldiers that wanted to attack Nami and Usopp with their guns
3. in Alabasta, he protects her from Daz Bones
4. the guy saves the girl when she was being pursued by some enemies in Skypiea
5. in Thriller Bark; although the whole crew was saved, Zoro was still the one to make sure the crew wasn't annihilated
6. Zoro saves Nami's group when the King Neptun was about to attack (not sure this is a certain death so don't take this one too seriously)
7. the guy even saved her body in Punk Hazard (well, Sanji's soul was inside Nami's body haha..)
8. Zoro saves Nami and Chopper when they were attacked by Monet
Of course, I'm not saying saving someone the most means they have to end up together. I just like this. Nami has also saved Zoro once when she pulled the guy from the pool. More than actual saves, she has also saved him when she got back his swords (eventually, that would have ended in death if she didn't do so) or when she released him and Usopp from handcuffs.

12) Aside from saving each other, the two also show how much they care for each other. Zoro has shown worry many times when she was in danger - and as if it wasn't enough, he has once shown he is worried about her even though he wasn't the one to come and save her too.
Nami worries about Zoro a lot, too - she has shown her caring side to him when she was looking after him in Thriller Bark after all. Not to mention she calls his name everytime she senses he is heading into dangerous situations (Thriller Bark, Skypiea, Shabaody Archipelago etc.). You can't say they hate each other at this point anymore. There is a time when Zoro truly said he wished for Nami to die a horrible death, but he didn't say he hated her - at least not in the manga. I just take it as some kind of emphasize that he absolutely didn't like the situation she forced him into at that moment :"D

13) Now this would have been all pretty harmless to IF the flirty man named Sanji wasn't there too. It seems like most of the fights between Zoro and Sanji somehow involve Nami - the first time was when Sanji misheard Zoro saying Nami's chest is flat, then many other times when Sanji swoons over her and Zoro comments things about him being an idiot. However, after two years, it seems like this does not apply anymore, since he didn't react when Sanji got nosebleed after seeing Nami. Nevertheless, he was still angry when Sanji touched Nami's breasts to gain a "boost". What's more, Zoro doesn't mostly comment anything about other women Sanji swoons over (the only exception was Viola - but that might be because Nami was in danger and Zoro was pissed that Sanji still had time to play around o.o").
14) We know now they are funny together, they understand each other very well, they trust each other. They know each other one's capabilities.
Zoro is also seen to be the only person to truly even go against her. He can be harsh towards her to even tell her to shut up, but he would never hit her as it has been shown many times. Out of all the men, he is the only one who treats her the way she is - he knows she can be flirtarious but she isn't serious about it, he knows she loves money maybe even too much. On the other hand, Nami is the only one who can truly treat Zoro the way he is too (aside from Sanji, but Sanji is a guy). We also know how Zoro never hesitates to save her although he calls her the pain in the arse. Both of them have showed how much they care for each other too. Now, what is left? I don't know...maybe just to mention they are comfortable to be with each other. Zoro has shown to sleep in Nami's presence and they are sometimes seen together too.

-Here, I will again mention the moment with Sanji - the way how both of them very calmly expressed how much Sanji's behaviour is unwanted (posted the pictures here so you wouldn't have to scroll up)
Heavy hints
I mean hints that show a lot of ZoNa vibe ^^
The first heavy hint I'm gonna mention is a cover page of chapter 232. Now, everyone, notice few things. I myself didn't know about it (someone said it in the forum), but I checked it, so it should be right.
Nami is standing besides a fox and there is a sign with Where Ever she has on her neck. For a navigator who knows where to go, now doesn't it make it strange for her to have the sign Where Ever? That is something a directionless person like Zoro would stick to. The most interesting thing here is a pointer with words ROUTE 666 written on it. Route 666 exist in reality, it's the 193 mile highway that is said to lead into hell and has often been referred to as a "beast of a highway" or "the Devil's highway". Couldn't that as well represent just the road to hell here? More importantly, it even seems like Nami is trying to hitch a ride into it.

All of this could have been absolutely normal and harmless IF..the fox wasn't called "ZORRO" in Spanish. Coincidence? No way. I'm pretty sure Oda knows fox are called like that in Spanish. Seriously, what a "concidence" when here, we can see a fox is doing the same thing as Zoro. They are the only ones eating a bun, yes?
And of course, the biggest cherry on the cake. Back in Whiskey Peak, they had this small conversation about hell too.
Doesn't it give a vibe the two of them are going to hell together? Heheh, not to even mention Zoro once said to some fishman pirates his attack is gonna chase them to the depths of hell ^^" He could as well make sure Nami goes to hell too xD
Another hint is in the colorspread 526 and I consider this as a biggest hint of all. We can see Luffy standing in the middle of a picture and he has a leg on the tiger and a hand wrapped around the dragon. This way, it seems like he is trying to bring the tiger and dragon together, right? Now, we see Nami and behind her is the said tiger. Then, there is Zoro and behind him is the dragon. If the tiger represents Nami and the dragon Zoro, then the fact Luffy is trying to bring those animals together can also mean he is trying to bring Zoro and Nami together, right?
What' more, in the yin yang perspective, tiger and women represent yin, while dragon and men represent yang. I think everyone knows what yin yang is about - yin and yang represent the opposite of each other. And in this case, this just means that Nami is the opposite of Zoro and vice versa. More importantly though, these opposites always stick together, they always go in hand to hand ^^

The last hint is according to me just a little one Oda is giving regarding ZoNa and even FRobin - Nami is looking in Zoro's direction (straight to his eye even xD), while Robin is looking in Franky's direction ^^
Thoughts about them...
-I have always found it to be so natural for Nami and Zoro to argue with each other and at the same time, they still understood one another so well. Despite their annoyance, they care very deeply for one another and they are often worried about the other one as well. Even if they won't end up together, I still find them to be very very good friends. If someone dares to say they hate each other..well pal, you probably missed few things there.
My opinions of their current relationship (manga chapter 720+) :
-I don't know what to say aside from the fact there aren't much moments pre-timeskip like post-timeskip. In a way, I can understand it because in OP world, I think only few days passed since they have assembled. Still, I wish there were more moments hahah xD I seriously miss their arguing and .. just talking and everything. Without them interacting much, it makes me feel like the crew isn't that "warm" like before TT.TT
How did I come to like this pairing?
As to my "way" to liking this pair...it's really strange and maybe a bit surprising hehe ^^ long story short, I searched through the internet (before I watched One Piece..more like, it was accidental when I sometimes also searched for some info regarding it) and found that most popular pairings are LuNa, SanNa and ZoRobin. So, I tried liking each of these pairs, but somehow along the time, I became more aware of ZoNa and after seeing few particular scenes I grew to like ZoNa more. And no, I didn't become one of those three other pairings' fan. I wonder how is that so? Mmmhm.... for LuNa, I have a strong sis-bro relationship feeling, for SanNa, Sanji is too much of a flirt and for ZoRobin I don't see any big interactions between them - and I also grew more on Frobin. Uh, about ZoTa, I can understand it, but there are many things standing in the way.
Truthfully, if you ask me whether I want them to be a real couple sharing romantic moments, I have to say that I don't know. I do enjoy reading fanfics about them in a romantic relationship, but I also somehow like how their friendship works the way it is. Maybe if Oda includes something, I will reconsider it. I like how they sometimes can't stand each other, but in anytime, they will always worry about one another ^^ You can also think that this blog is more to prove they aren't just arguing and fighting or even hating each other, but they can also share moments of understanding and caring ^^

I like how they sometimes can't stand each other, but in anytime, they will always worry about one another ^^ You can also think that this blog is more to prove they aren't just arguing and fighting or even hating each other, but they can also share moments of understanding and caring ^^
