East Blue Saga canon moments
- Romance Dawn arc - no moments (haven't met yet)
- Orange Town arc
-Zoro learns about Nami from Buggy pirates and wonders if she would join them. He didn't really care about her history or whatever she did to those pirates, he was just impressed by her abilities alone. What's more, this is by far the only time he ever wondered if someone would join them.
-> ch. 8
-Their first encounter was when Zoro protected Nami from Buggy pirates. Note that he said on "one girl" - in anime, I heard he said "onna" which can also be translated as "woman" ^^ just wanted to point this out.
-> ch. 10
-Zoro asks Nami whether she is hurt - he knew she was trying to help his captain and probably got hurt in the process. Otherwise why would he even protect a total stranger to him and even ask her whether she is hurt?
-> ch. 10
-When it is revealed that the other crewmember Luffy talked about is Zoro, Nami and other Buggy pirates are shocked to discover this. Also, it seems like Zoro's popularity was great enough for a thief Nami to recognize him. Although she seems confused about this, she didn't show that she was particularly afraid of him
-> ch. 10
-Zoro asks Nami for light. Nothing serious, just liking the fact Zoro is asking still a stranger to him for something ^^
-> ch. 11
-The swordsman later asks Nami who she is, to which she replies she is a THIEF. However, Luffy tells him she is their NAVIGATOR. With that said, Zoro doesn't question her anymore, even though Nami clearly said something that could make Zoro being suspicious of her.
-> ch. 11
-Zoro decides to run away with his captain still in cage. He carries him despite his injury and Nami is amazed and shocked at the same time by his action. If you think about it, what Nami saw in the previous few moments was: Pirate hunter Zoro saving her; then he tries to save a guy who claims to be a pirate, fights a pirate captain and gets hurt and finally uses drastical means to get out of the situation. Even though she already considers him a pirate, she is still amazed that the pirate can go to such lengths to save another pirate (and her belief all pirates are bad wavered here).
-> ch. 11
-When Nami later shows up, both Zoro and Luffy already call her "Our navigator" - even Zoro who probably knew what she did to some Buggy pirates and even heard her call herself a thief. Nami then repays her debt when Zoro saved her by stealing a key to open the cage Luffy was kept in.
-> ch. 12 (anime didn't show Zoro calling her our navigator which is a pity -.-)
-Nami worries about Zoro a lot during the battle with Buggy pirates-especially the part when he battles with Cabaji. And that's although they knew each other shortly and Nami should know he is that Pirate hunter who is infamous and even dangerous, too. This just shows how much Nami is nice and kind to people she doesn't know for long ^^ (and I like the fact it's directed at Zoro here the most ^^)
-> ch. 14
-> ch. 16
-Nami wonders how Zoro and Luffy can still be alive, to which Zoro responds with "There is always a way". And in the next panel he is eating something Nami gave him ^^.
-> ch. 22
-On the way to the Syrup Village, they stumble upon an island inhabited by strange animals and a man living in a box. Luffy decides to go there and he wanted to call out Zoro, too. However, his attempt was stopped by Nami, who told Luffy to let Zoro sleep because he is still injured. It's very nice even the caring side Nami has already shows so early in the series to Zoro ^^
-> ch. 22
Later, all three of them sail to the next island where Usopp lives and where they will have to deal with Black cat pirates.
Later, all three of them sail to the next island where Usopp lives and where they will have to deal with Black cat pirates.
- Syrup Village arc
-After Luffy, Nami and Zoro arrived at Syrup village, they go to the bar. Zoro scare the boys by saying that they ate their "captain" Usopp and the boys look at Nami and accuse her of being a hag xD of course, Nami is angry at it and she later yells at Zoro, who is actually genuinely laughing from the whole show - he must have found those boys' and Nami's reaction amusing and I honestly wish he laughed this genuinely much more than now TT.TT
-> ch. 24
-Nami sits next to Zoro ^^ and quite closely at that ^^
-> ch. 24
-A moment where both Zoro and Nami share a mutual agreement regarding Luffy. They have met only briefly and they already caught each others on the same wavelength when it comes to the captain.
-> ch. 24
-If someone would say that Zoro and Nami is a mature couple...yeah, they might not be the most mature people now but at that time, they were definitely more mature than the rest. This picture also shows it when they are more composed than Luffy and the boys. They look a bit like parents here ^^
-> ch. 25
-As the crew waits for the Black Cat pirates, they start feeling something isn't right and Nami asks herself whether is she overly sensitive when she hears "Go!". The fact that Zoro is paying attention to what she is saying and he later even asks Usopp about it shows that (although they know each other not long) he pays attention to her and considers her thoughts.
-> ch. 28
-When Luffy and Usopp rush to the other side of the island, Zoro tries to follow them but he sees Nami struggling and asks her what is she doing. She then drags him back on the floor with oil and steps on him to get up.
-> ch. 28 - Yup, that was definitely mean. However, this moment is one of the moments where I started liking them a bit ^^
-Zoro is pretty angry at Nami and claims he is going to kill her. I agree it was rather harsh, but I believe he was just caught up in the moment and he didn't mean it seriously ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ
-> ch. 28
-Unlike in the previous chapter, Zoro now declares he is going to teach Naim a lesson - it seems like he has calmed down a bit more after all the struggling in an attempt to get up.
-> ch. 29
-Right when the pirates tried to make their way in the village, Luffy and Zoro showed up and blew them back. Nami quite non-chalantly asks them what took them so long.
-> ch. 29
-Zoro and Luffy both answer Nami's question and yell at both her and Usopp (because apparently, Nami and Usopp are to blame here ^^""). Zoro yells at her and it's clear he is still angry at her, right?
-> ch. 29
-Nami then asks Zoro what took him so long when she was the one who caused his lateness ^^" it's clear Zoro is still quite bitter about it and he might have still though about his "lesson" to her. Zoro rightfully accuses her and calls out on her mistakes or things she did he didn't like in the slightest. However, Nami is still able to oppose him haha l_l"
-> ch. 30
-Nami as the pro thief is the first one to immediatly realize Zoro lost two of his swords before Zoro even noticed it himself. Her face tells she knows it's not a good thing in the slightest and tells Zoro about it..
-> ch. 31
-As if that wasn't enough...they refer to that guy who stole it a "cat burglar". Does it ring you a bell somehow? *a bit of a spoiler* Who is it that is called Cat Burglar now? I doubt this was something intended - more like a coincidence only...but...if it is possible, could it be that the now Cat Burglar Nami will sometime in the future steal Zoro's "sword", too? Yup, and he wouldn't even realize it before it's too late. Sorry, couldn't help myself..I hope no one got offended or something... (o.o)
-> ch. 31
-Zoro fights some pirates and Usopp tries to help him. However, the shot hit Zoro, not the pirates. Nami is upset at Usopp for it, but when Usopp tells her Zoro deliberately took the hit, she is shocked and speechless, too (dots in the second bubble).
-> ch. 32
-Zoro gets angry at Usopp for what he did and Nami immediately understood that Zoro tried to protect them while deliberately taking the bullet. And right here, Zoro is struggling and he also realizes he needs at least one more sword.
-> ch. 32
-Nami in the next page realizes he needs his swords back, too! Well, it wouldn't take a genius to realize what Zoro needs but it's still nice to see both of them are thinking about the same thing in this moment ^^ Nami isn't afraid to put her life on line when she believes Zoro can do better if she can somehow get his katanas back. The swordsman however gets distracted by her when he sees her running - even though he had quite hard time dealing with his enemy.
-> ch. 32
-Nami was able to get to Zoro's swords and although she didn't handle them with much care, he is still glad she managed to get them back. Zoro feels a lot safer and he thanks Nami for what she did ^^ I also really like how they are both smiling from Nami's success ^^
-> ch. 33
-When Nami tries to wake Luffy up, Zoro sees a weapon flying towards her and he warns her. Now notice this, you bunch of ignorant masses (sorry, it wasn't meant to be offensive..I couldn't help not saying it-and it's a Gintama reference btw)! If Zoro was serious about killing her and teaching her a lesson, why did he warn her about that flying weapon? There is no way someone who claims those threats seriously to look so distressed and warn her about the danger here.
-> ch. 33
Although it's a bit sudden, these are all the moments we have for this arc. Usopp later joins them and they all sail out.
While sailing, they encounter Zoro's "brothers", one of them having scurvy. Nami saves him and the brothers reveal quite a good place where they can find a cook for their ship.

- Baratie arc
-Nami uses Sanji's chivalry and Zoro is the only one who comments it - and negatively at that. He doesn't really like it but he didn't stop her either. Nami takes his comment in a good way and warns them to watch out for her, too.
-> ch. 46
-Zoro asks Johnny and Yosaku about their ship and then even more specifically he asks what happened to Nami (who was on the ship). He shows a great concern for her but his "brothers" tell him she isn't here anymore.
-> ch. 49
-When Luffy, Usopp and Zoro discover Nami stole their ship and sailed somewhere, Zoro questions himself how could he let his guard down around her for a moment. He trusted her almost all the time she was with them and he doesn't like the idea she had deceived them (he is banging his fist on the ship - a sign that he definitely doesn't like it.).
-> ch. 50
After that, Zoro fought Mihawk and although he lost and received heavy wounds, he still decides to go after Nami (although it was more or less under captain's orders). With that, we move on to the next arc Arlong Park arc!

- Arlong Park arc
-Zoro on his way to retrieve Nami back. I wouldn't bring this out, but I read somewhere Zoro said he will cut her. I checked both manga and anime and I have to say HELL NO HE SAID HE WILL CUT HER!!! He said he will cut his way in, not her... get it?
Haha..maybe he was anxious and wanted to get there as soon as possible? ^^
Haha..maybe he was anxious and wanted to get there as soon as possible? ^^
-> ch. 70
-Zoro arrives at Arlong Park and declares he is here to bring one woman back (and insults Arlong and his men in the process). Now now, if One Piece was a romance manga, wouldn't this be like a seriously desperate guy trying to find his girl? xD Ok, I should just shut up. -.-
-> ch. 71
-Zoro is surprised to see Nami being qith Arlong's crew and he certainly doesn't fancy that. Well, he didn't seem to like these fishmen to begin with and seeing her there really gave him shock.
-> ch. 71
-Zoro is surprised when Nami tells him she just used them and he questions her whether is this her true self. I don't think he truly believed everything she spouted here, because if he did, he wouldn't question her about her true self. And later...
-> ch. 71
..if Zoro truly believed everything Nami said, he wouldn't even notive a change in Nami's expression after Arlong states Nami is a cold-blooded witch capable of forgeting her own parent's death. Right at that moment, he knew THAT FACE was her true self (or feelings) and a bit paradoxically to what he said back in Baratie arc (ch. 50), he claims he didn't really trusted her to begin with. There are also three small lines beside Nami's face indicating she was a bit surprised by this statement.
-> ch. 71
-Total turnover 180° ... first, Zoro is surprised and displeased to see her being part of Arlong's crew, but after seeing her true self, he starts acting like he didn't trust her and right after Nami asks him whether he can dissappear already, Zoro jumps into the pool.
-> ch. 71
-Nami is surprised by his actions and I can't help but notice that right after a fishman said he maybe committed suicide, she looks even more shocked. However, even though Arlong tells them to leave him be, Nami still jumps after Zoro to save him from certain death.
-> ch. 71
-There is no way Zoro tried to commit suicide, this all was just his way of testing her although it meant putting his life on line. However, he trusted her and his instincts enough to leave his life in her hands. When they resurface, he acuses her of being a crook who shouldn't act all though.
-> ch. 71
-Nami is taken aback by the fact he saw through her and Zoro then teases her for her slowness. She warns him he will be dead should he involve with her anymore than he already was. She only gets his cheeky response "I wonder..." from it.
-When Nami asks Zoro about his bandages, he tells her he just didn't have any change of clothes (which was definitely a lie) and Nami didn't like his attitude in the slightest - he was still teasing her despite being in a bad situation (and some people also think he was flirting with her a bit here hehe ◕‿◕). She then punched him in the place of his injuries, knocking him out successfully.
Zoro's decision to play it cool and well...even tease Nami a bit was actually clever. If he told her he got hurt in the fight with a Shichibukai, Nami might have sympathized with him and that could further raise Arlong's distrust towards her, which wouldn't be good to her and Zoro knew that much.
Also! He even tells her to be quicker next time... so does it also mean he is probably gonna go under water (=drown) again and he expects her to save him next time, too? ◕‿◕

-> ch. 71
-Nami later frees Zoro and tells him to get out.
-> ch. 71
-Zoro does get out...of the jail that's it - and he beats some fishmen pirates that were there. Although he heard her clearly telling him to leave, he still stays since he has nothing to do and after all, he also promised Luffy to bring her back. He said "after all", does it mean he would still try to beat Arlong even if he didn't promise anything to Luffy? He knows he has surely gotten in some complicated situation, too. It's still he would try to help Nami, promise to Luffy or not (at least I believe it).
-Also, Zoro wears a shirt with some kind of whirlpool and wave patterns. Wave is the meaning of Nami's shirt ^^
-Also, Zoro wears a shirt with some kind of whirlpool and wave patterns. Wave is the meaning of Nami's shirt ^^
-> ch. 72
-Not a moment, but this shows Zoro intended to stay in Arlong Park and defeat Arlong when he returns. Since Zoro had nothing to do aside from waiting, he decided to save Usopp in meanwhile.
-> ch. 72
-Zoro seems very displeased with Sanji's antics and he thinks Sanji is just making the situation more complicated (when Sanji just asked her whether she remembers him). Also, in the last panel, it seems like he is the only one to notice Johnny/Yosaku calling her a witch - because that's something Arlong called her like, too (and Zoro heard it). It probably surprised him; for what reasons is something I don't know though.
-> ch. 76
-Nami tells the crew they are no match for Arlong, but Zoro answers her he couldn't care less about it. Right after Nami tells him Usopp is at the bottom of the sea, Zoro has enough of her nonsense and charges at her. He is stopped by Sanji, who however doesn't know much about the situation while Zoro knows quite a lot about it - from the fact how much Nami doesn't like Arlong, to the fact she can put up a facade, to the fact she still can't let one person die in front of her eyes, to the fact she even told him to get out of there. Pretty much a lot of things, right? I don't think he was trying to harm her that much here, but maybe just to wake her up and swipe that facade off her face (can't exclude he won't hurt her if he did charge at her; but even so, he is portrayed as someone who doesn't care about gender and the fact he treats Nami as an equal to him -gender wise- is important to me).
-Hmm...I don't know whether it was or wasn't intended or whether or not it's true, but it doesn't seem like Zoro used his swords while charging at her. He could have probably unsheathed his swords when Sanji attacked him.

-> ch. 76
- One of the first disputes Zoro and Sanji have involves Nami... Anyway, I wanted to point out that although Zoro charged at her moments earlier, he still answers "who knows" after being questioned by Sanji. He is even smiling while saying it - it doesn't seem to me he was pissed at that time because he wanted to avenge Usopp. It's possible then Zoro just wanted her to stop pretending and maybe even make her ask them to help her out.
-Sanji misheards or misunderstands Zoro saying he called Nami's small time and attacks him.
-Sanji misheards or misunderstands Zoro saying he called Nami's small time and attacks him.
-> ch. 76
-Right. Here. Nojiko comes here and tells the crew it's useless to do anything. Instead of worrying about what that means, Luffy, Usopp and Sanji are somehow distracted by her presence, but only Zoro remains unaffected and asks her what she means!
-> ch. 76
-Luffy isn't interested in Nami's story and he leaves. Zoro however stays and declares they will listen to her story, but he doubts it would somehow change the fact they want and will help Nami out. Although he declared it, he fell asleep the moment right after. I don't think he was insensitive or whatever, because he already knows Nami isn't working for Arlong out of joy and he probably suspects Arlong killed someone important to her, too. He didn't have to listen to her story when he knew that much, he was even prepared to help her no matter what her past was. What's more, he had quite serius injuries and if he wanted to help her out, he would need some energy, right? That's also one of the other possible reasons why he fell asleep ^^;
-> ch. 77
-First things first: it's interesting Nami told Luffy similar words Zoro said to Sanji back in chapter 76.
-Right after Nami asks Luffy for help, the rest (Zoro, Sanji, Usopp) is already here to go and help her out. Notice Zoro is already awake here and not asleep anymore because seriously, the fight is going to start now.
-Right after Nami asks Luffy for help, the rest (Zoro, Sanji, Usopp) is already here to go and help her out. Notice Zoro is already awake here and not asleep anymore because seriously, the fight is going to start now.
-> ch. 81
-Nothing important; but I just found interesting that while Arlong asks Nami who is she with, he stands right in front of Zoro and Sanji. However, Zoro's figure takes more space in the almost last panel compared to the first panel.
-> ch. 88
-A very nice manga-only gesture (why the heck wasn't it in anime?!) Zoro showed to Nami. A thumbs down, probably meaning Arlong will go down. Nami's face brightens up and she seems relieved and glad to see him alive and kicking, doesn't she?
-> ch. 88
-When Arlong undoes Zoro's bandages, he reveals Zoro's serious wound, getting a very shocked face from Nami. She probably realized Zoro earlier lied about his injuries in order to protect her from being more suspected (and because she even punched him, she probably felt guilty, too).
-> ch. 89
-After the fight, a marine officer Nezumi who confiscated all Nami's money then shows up but the seriously injured Zoro catches him with ease. It seems like Zoro was really pissed at the fact another guy tried to ruin Nami's life despite his injuries (or he at least didn't like the fact the guy was trying to ruin the celebration mood there). Nami later sends Nezumi flying and demands her money back from him.
-> ch. 94
-The crew decides to sail from Cocoyashi after the party. Nami is nowhere to be seen, but after she shows up and steals some purses from the villagers, they "officially" depart. Her action though didn't go uncommented by her crewmembers. Zoro wonders whether is she going to betray them again, but he is actually sighing (probably with relief that the ordeal is over) while stating it ^^
-> ch. 95
Their next destination is Loguetown, a city near the entrance to Grand Line ^^
Their next destination is Loguetown, a city near the entrance to Grand Line ^^
- Loguetown arc
-Instead of lifting weighs or napping, Zoro watches Nami using Sanji as some guardian for her tangerine groove and comments it. No matter what one says, even though Zoro might not be really interested in women, he still doesn't really like it when they have a new crewmember being a flirt (that is flirting with Nami at that! And *spoiler* it will show more later on, the fact Zoro doesn't particularly like Sanji flirting with Nami ^^ ).
-> ch. 96
-Zoro doesn't have money, so he borrows them from Nami which he has to return her with the 300% interest. The innocent Zoro then borrows money from her and he has yet to realize it was one great mistake. *spoiler again: he is probably the only crewmember thus far who had to repay the debt or just pay money to her purely because of loan and money alone - while that can't be said in other crewmembers' cases*
-> ch. 96
-To be honest, I didn't really ship them in East Blue Saga at all :D but I admit, there were times when I wondered about them. I was surprised to see Zoro saving Nami - dat was just too cool ^^ if he hadn't saved her that time, there would be no Nami at all. The second time I wondered about them was in Syrup Village, when Nami stepped on Zoro. They appeared like a young bickering couple there ^^ yup, I think that was the time when I first thought "wow, they look funny together". But then again, I wasn't really suppossed to ship them (I wrote about it a bit in the end of the Why ZoNa in particular article).
And the last moment from East Blue Saga, where I wondered about them again was in Arlong Park when Zoro pretty much tested her. I think maybe I did ship them at that time because that moment alone left me in awe ^^ well, either way, they have a lot of interactions in this saga and I like them a lot ^^
